Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will challenge President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination in 2024.
The son of late presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, the younger bearer of the name has attracted attention for his opposition to COVID-19 lockdown measures and has been a long-time advocate against vaccinations more broadly.
Kennedy filed his bid with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported. Despite his membership in one of the Democrats’ most well-connected political families, his bid to unseat Biden is generally considered a longshot.
RFK Jr. announced he was mulling a bid in early March. “I have passed the biggest hurdle, that my wife has green-lighted it,” he said at the time.
He will follow in the footsteps of his father, who sought the Democratic nomination in 1968, but was assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan while on the campaign trail.
Kennedy Jr. will join self-help guru Marianne Williamson in challenging the president.
